Diffuse γ-rays from galactic halos

چکیده

The γ-ray sky as we know it today is a composite of the emission from point sources and diffuse emission (see Fig.1). The most prominent feature is the galactic plane, in which interactions between cosmic rays and the thermal gas lead to γ-ray emission by π-decay and bremsstrahlung. On top of this diffuse emission we see point sources all over the map, part of them being pulsars, another part distant AGN, and also a significant fraction of yet unidentified sources. But we also see that the diffuse emission extends out of the galactic plane up to the poles. There appears to be an isotropic emission component which is presumably extragalactic in origin and may be understood as blend of unresolved AGN, but there is also considerable galactic emission. At higher latitudes interactions between cosmic rays and thermal gas still play a role, but inverse-Compton scattering of ambient photons by cosmic ray electrons becomes increasingly important. This emission tells us about the physical conditions in the halo as seen by the cosmic ray particles, and it may also reveal previously hidden gas, e.g. baryonic dark matter.

HIGH LATITUDE GAMMA RAYS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRGO

A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...

Multiwavelength Observation of Wimp Annihilation

The annihilation of neutralino dark matter may result in observable signals in different wavelength. In the present paper we will discuss the effect of neutralino annihilation in the halo of our Galaxy and in its center. According to high resolution cold dark matter simulations, large virialized halos are formed through the constant merging of smaller halos appeared at previous times. At each e...

The Case for a Low Extragalactic Gamma-ray Background

Measurements of the diffuse extragalactic γ-ray background (EGRB) are complicated by a strong Galactic foreground. Estimates of the EGRB flux and spectrum, obtained by modeling the Galactic emission, have produced a variety of (sometimes conflicting) results. The latest analysis of the EGRET data found an isotropic flux Ix = 1.45 ± 0.05 above 100 MeV, in units of 10−5 ph s−1 cm−2 sr−1. We analy...

Diffractive Interaction and Scaling Violation in pp → π Interaction and GeV Excess in Galactic Diffuse γ-Ray Spectrum of EGRET

We present here a new calculation of the γ-ray spectrum from pp → π in the Galactic ridge environment. The calculation includes the diffractive pp interaction and incorporates the Feynman scaling violation for the first time. Galactic diffuse γ-rays come, predominantly, from π → γγ in the sub-GeV to multi-GeV range. Hunter et al. found, however, an excess in the GeV range (“GeV Excess”) in the ...

The Cosmic Ray Distribution in Sagittarius B

The HESS instrument has observed a diffuse flux of ∼ TeV γ-rays from a large solid angle around the Galactic center (GC). This emission is correlated with the distribution of gas in the region suggesting that the γ-rays originate in
